Why Facebook is a Model for the World

I Don’t Know Where This Is

One of the reasons I love facebook (besides the birthday reminders and the endless possibilities for wasting time) is that people post cool pictures like these.

Of course, people post a lot of dumb pictures, too, and people post pictures that I might find interesting if I actually knew them but then, that is what you get when you have lots of friends who you don’t actually know in real life.  As Adrian Monk always says “It’s a blessing…and a curse.”

Still, it takes little effort to breeze past the bullshit and pay attention only to the stuff you think is cool, and facebook is, for me, like a daily version of National Geographic, with scenes of beauty, natural and man-made, from around the world and points beyond, sometimes way, way beyond.

(on a side note, I do not understand news articles, and even comments on facebook complaining about facebook, that refer to it as if it is one thing.  Everybody’s facebook is different, right?  You keep the people who post stuff you like, you unfriend those who are a

waste of your time.  Ditto Twitter, I guess, but I confess that my Twitter feed is mostly crap.  All I’m saying is that it’s not Twitter’s fault that I have been too lazy to cull the crowd.)

My point about the photos, though, is that it truly is an amazing world we live in and I think the solution to all of the world’s problems and the key to a golden age, the way forward into an era of peace, prosperity and non-stop inspiration for all mankind is to focus on the really cool stuff and build out from that instead of focusing on all the shit, all the hate and ignorance, and trying to figure out how to overcome it.

It’s similar to Maslow’s view of psychoanalysis, that instead of focusing on fucked up people and trying to figure out why they’re fucked up, we should focus on the successful, happy emotionally well adjusted people and figure out what they’re doing right.

There is a lot right with the world.  Let’s start there.
