The Dangers of Oversensitivity

Basically, I believe political correctness is a good thing.  Sure, it limits what you can say and, in some instances, how you behave, but is the world really lessened because you can’t say nigger and queer and you are no longer seen as a harmless flirt when you sneak up behind the hot girl in the office and give her a big old arms around titty hug?

But, it can go too far.  Few people would disagree with that, so the devil is in the details.  How far is too far?

Governor Chris Christie (the fat guy) is in trouble again.  The guy is like the Lindsay Lohan of political offensiveness.  He just can’t stop.  Recently, he compained that “an African-American woman is trying to block this bill” instead of saying “Sheila Oliver,” which is her name, and maybe calling a black man boy.

I’ve just read the transcript, haven’t seen any video, but it sort of seems to me like he meant “boy” in the sense of hoo boy, not you, boy.  The “African-American woman” comment was politically calculated and nasty, but technically faultless.  She is, indeed, an African-American woman.

What we need to bear in mind is that both of these comments were in the context of a debate over school vouchers.  Christie, of course, being an anti-government, privatize everything, tea-bagger libertarian is very much in favor of school vouchers.  He wants to give public money away to privately managed schools, and allow the public schools to bleed, slowly and painfully, to death.

While we are busy shouting “Racist!,” we are taking our eye off the ball.  He is out to destroy education in New Jersey.

The other incident I noticed today was from Rachel Maddow, who generally I love, but as I’m ranting on liberals tonight, she’s the number one one.  In the midst of a very effective (the woman always has her facts lined up)piece advocating gun control, she showed a clip of Ted Cruz (gun nut-TX) arguing with Dianne Feinstein. (D-CA)

DiFi (of whom I am not a fan – she didn’t lift a fingernail  to oppose George Bush back when the opposing might have done some good) handled herself O.K. in the argument, nothing special, but Maddow was praising her as if she were St. Diane of San Francisco, and complaining about how Cruz was disrespectful of her because she is a woman.

Cruz was disrespecting her because he is an inbred, paranoid, teabagging gun nut and they disrespect everybody.

Let’s make the argument against guns without bringing up feminism, or anything else.  These are distractions.
