I didn’t actually read this story when it was in the news a day or two ago- so many news stories, so little time. Also, it’s nothing new. A 5 year old boy in Kentucky shot and killed his little sister. It is tragic, but it happens all the time. There’s not much to say about it. Nothing in any legislation that’s been proposed would have prevented this accident. I wasn’t going to write about it, so I didn’t bother reading it.
Then somebody posted it on my facebook page and I got this additional piece of information: it was the child’s gun. His dad had given it to him as a gift. The “Crickett” rifle is marketed to children – it’s marketing slogan is “My First Rifle.” Camo colored for boys, pink for girls. No shit.
You have to be 16 to drive a car. You’re not allowed to go on half the rides at most theme parks at 5 – unless you are a very tall 5, because you must be “this tall” to ride. I’ve got a 6 year old, and I scream at her like a madman if she tries to cross the street by herself.
I don’t want to pile on the parents too much. I am sure they are devastated by the loss of their daughter, and it was, of course, an accident. But, this is not responsible gun ownership. No 5 year old should ever own a gun.
I didn’t even want my kids to have toy guns, but every parent soon learns they have little control over that. They have grandparents, and there are sticks that they can make into guns lying all over the ground. And water pistols are kind of fun.
But this was a real gun. Not a bb gun. Not a pop gun. Not a water pistol. A gun which can, and did, kill. Whatever the parents are, they are not responsible gun owners. They are totally responsible for the death of their little girl.
There needs to be a law against kids that young having a gun. There shouldn’t need to be a law, but as long as there are parents as irresponsible as this, there needs to be a law.
