Don’t click on this link and watch the video unless you are prepared to be outraged. If you are a sensitive animal lover you should probably not watch this video at all. It’s real. It’s brutal.
Apparently, the legacy of Daryl Gates lives on. Los Angeles cops have not changed a bit since the days of Rodney King. Video has gotten a bit sharper, but the cops are still mean, cruel, overbearing, violent low-lifes. I think the words “cowards” and “bullies” get tossed about too casually in our modern discourse, but they apply in this case, too.
The Rottweiler – a loyal breed
The story: A whole bunch of cops are in the neighborhood, a black neighborhood, and you can’t tell from the video what they were doing, there were at least 4 black and whites blocking off the street and what looked like an armored vehicle behind them, so I’m sure they caught somebody smoking reefer on their front porch, at the very least. Maybe they were after a genuine bad guy, I don’t know, it’s not really part of the story.
Anyway, there was a guy standing on the corner, quite a distance from the police, and he was filming them. In turn, other people, further back, were filming him filming, and that’s the film we’ve got. You see, Cops, this thing about filming everybody all the time has got to work both ways.
He also walked out into the street to film all the police cars. He was in no way interfering with the police. He was nowhere near them. They could have conducted their business and ignored him, and everybody would be much happier right about now.
The man had a dog. A Rottweiler. I like Rottweilers. They are generally quite gentle creatures, if you don’t fuck with them. Or their master.
Anyway, after a while the police come down to confront the guy with the camera, which they had no need to do whatsoever. If you don’t want to be on camera, you shouldn’t be living in L.A. Also, staying half a block away from the guy with the camera would have worked, too.
But nooooo. Cops have to confront the guy. They ask him to put his dog in the car. He does. Then they cuff him for no apparent reason at all and start pushing him toward the police car. That’s when the dog – and this is a hero dog, in my book, this is exactly what you’d hope your dog would do if he saw you being led away in chains – jumped out the window and started barking at the police officers, who proceeded to shoot him to death, very thoroughly, with lots and lots of bullets.
The dog took a while to die, whining pathetically with his legs flailing like those dead frogs in electricity experiments. It was horrible. Don’t watch the video in front of children.
I want those police to be fired, permanently. I want them to be restricted from owning weapons, forever. And I want them to do many, many hours of community service, at an animal shelter. At the very least.
