Journalists, Do Your God Damned Job!

Where is she now, John Travolta

I wrote about this incident once before, on July 15th to be exact, but I noticed that Huffpo had another article today on Leah Remini leaving the Church of Scientology, and the article was a prime example of what is wrong with internet journalism.  It was basically  a repeat of their previous article, with one new quote from Remini: “I’m not going to shut up.”

There is one relevant question here, which was barely alluded to in the article.  Where in the world is Shelly Miscavige?  Why hasn’t a Huffpo reporter placed a phone call to David Miscavige and asked him that question.  Then, at least, they could write an article with some updated information, like “David Miscavige, head of the Scientology Church, denies rumors that he murdered his wife and buried her in a shallow grave in a National Park” or “Miscavige Says He Hasn’t Seen Wife in Years” or, at the very  least, “David Miscavige Refuses to  Take Our Calls.”

The woman, who used to hang out with Tom Cruise, John Travolta and Kirstie Alley, has been missing for almost 7 years.  This  is not just tabloid headline fodder.  This is tabloid headline gold.

But they just add one lame quote and  reprint the same story, assuming that all of their readers have memories like goldfish, once around the bowl and what was new once is new again.

The next time I read a story about Tom Cruise, whether it’s about an  upcoming film or an upcoming romance, I am going  to wonder “Does he know where Shelly Miscavige is?  Does this man, who’s been in  some  great movies, give him credit, have direct knowledge of a case of  kidnapping and torture and is keeping it quiet to protect his  weird cult?”

The next time I read a story about Kirstie Alley, my first thought is going to be “Who gives a flying fuck how much weight she has lost or gained?  Does she know whether or not her one time friend is chained to a wall in an Idaho dungeon?  Does she care?”

The next time I see a story about how much John Travolta likes it  when his masseur sticks a finger up his butt, I am not going to be able to think about much else than “Was he involved in  this somehow?  How can he just block it out of his mind that the  wife of the leader of his church hasn’t been  seen for almost as long as since he’s had a hit movie?”

The problem is not  just that no major media outlet is answering these questions.

The problem is that no major media outlet is even ASKING these questions.

Hi. . .stumbled across your blog whilst googling to see if anyone (read: the media) had asked anew “Where is Shelly?” today. And apparently no one (except for you), has. It is indeed troubling that the main attraction of Leah Remini’s defection has so far been a twitter bitch fight between her sister and Kirstie Alley. Meanwhile, a woman who is married to a notoriously violent man hasn’t been seen for 7 years and it’s just business as usual in the press! Personally, I think the reason why there’s been no journalistic investigation, save for the work that Tony Ortega does, is because the media today is one party total laziness, and another part completely spineless. Why spend time sniffing around and getting hassled by the CoS when you can just read twitter and write the same story over and over? So much easier and safer!

Also, just to note, the picture you have in your 15 July entry is not of Shelly. Believe it or not, that is Katie Holmes, caught at a horrifically bad angle. This is Shelly: http://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc435/karendelac/HighWinds/shelly-miscavigePORTRAIT.jpg

P.S. I enjoyed your entry on Anthony Weiner. Mirrors my thoughts exactly!

    • Thanks! I’m glad to know that somebody is following this case. It’s just too weird to be swept under the rug. I’ll have to read up more on Tony Ortega, too, as my knowledge of the case is pretty superficial. re the July 15th entry, I’ve amended it by way of comment.
