Cyberapples and Artificial Oranges

I saw a prediction the other day that 3-D printing would be bigger than the internet, and took a click but then clicked back, it looked like it was a big infomercial for 3-D printing, so not the most objective, but still an interesting prediction.

It's Off to a Good Start

It’s Off to a Good Start

3D printing has direct applications in the real, physical world so it has that going for it.  They’ve already managed to use it to produce body parts, like an ear, or a kidney, and that’s pretty special.  I’ve heard that 3-D printers may someday be able to build houses, but it strikes me that that might not prove commercially viable because there are plenty of materials out there for housebuilding that are natural, beautiful and in plentiful supply.  But I think they are getting close to being able to print meat, like you wouldn’t even need the animals any more.

How would the  vegetarians feel about that?

But the internet has  not peaked yet, and probably never will.  Google Glass seems to be a promising next step, although I think that’s more connectivity than I could handle.

But, even when every human being is wired into the net 24/7, even when it is drawing in data from deep space and the deep seas, every laboratory and hospital and university  in the known universe,  the internet will continue to expand as knowledge expands. And the more the universe of  knowledge expands, the quicker that great brain will grow to accommodate it.

So, no, 3D printing will never be a bigger development than the internet, because they  are both  great tools which will last long and keep evolving  into the future.  But, I hope it’s as big as they think it will be.  Animal free meat.   mmmmmmmmmmmmm.
