Tag Archives: a poem deferred

Rough Draft

I was looking forward to a nice calm weekend, spending a lot of time with facebook and twitter (although I followed a twitter link to somebody’s blog last night about how to use twitter more effectively, and I was damned near intimidated out of the whole concept.  Millions of people

Rovensko pod Troskami, the Train Station

trying to get other millions of people to read their oversimplified thoughts, and I DON’T CARE WHAT YOU FUCKING ATE FOR DINNER!), watching a couple of movies and maybe spending some quiet time working on my poetry because, amid all the distractions of everyday life, I don’t spend enough time on that.

I’ve got a couple of ideas.  One I started about a week ago, and it is a language teacher’s poem.  It starts out, “These are some verbs that you should know, to want, to need, to have, to go” and then there are 12  others but of course I need to flesh it out with some rhymes for each one, find some illustrations and it could be a great language lesson.  But, as I said, I got the idea about a week ago and it’s sitting on top of the printer with a million other pieces of scrap paper, stillborn.

(What happens to a poem deferred?  Does it dry up, like a raisin in the sun?)

Another idea is that we are surrounded by magic every day, the magic of birth and life, the magic of the cycle of the seasons, the magic of music and art, but we don’t think about it any more than a fish thinks about water.  I’ve got the line “We live in magic, but are unaware//because it seems so ordinary,” but that’s as far as I’ve got.

Another one that struck me last night as I was riding down the escalator at Florence, changing  from the red line to the yellow line, and watching the people going up, was about the horrible anonymity we all impose on ourselves as individual units in the human parade, but I don’t even have a starting line on that one yet.

Then, last night, Helena reminded me that we have to go up to Česky Raj for our niece’s 3rd birthday party.  Also, we need to put together Watson’s World News this weekend.  (see http://www.watsonenglish.cz)

So, there goes that.  Oh, well, it will be a fun weekend with the kids.
