Sam’s Solo Trip

I’m in a hurry to get out to a karaoke event tonight, and if I want to be able to stay out past midnight and not worry about getting my blog in on time, I’ve got to do it now.

Prague’s Loss is Austin’s Gain

I haven’t been to karaoke for a few months, but tonight is a friend’s going away party, and her boyfriend, too, but I’ve only met him a few times.  Alicia also writes a blog, in fact you  could say she was the one who inspired me to start, but her “View from Abroad” perspective is going to have to change, as she’ll probably be blogging from Austin.

This is one of the things I like about living in Prague.  People have going away parties, people have Welcome Back parties (I  know some people who pop back in for a visit once a year or so, and there’s a party every time), Birthday Parties, Art Gallery Openings and Hey, Come Check Out My New Pub parties.  Within the constantly changing, continually evolving expat community, there is no shortage of excuses for a party.

Today was not a terribly exciting day, except for the events of this morning and, if I just say what happened, it doesn’t sound exciting at all.  My son Sam took the bus to Turnov.

No big deal.  But he’s 9.  Sure, he very often goes to or comes home from school by himself, or to football practice.  We’ve been cool with that for a bit over a year now.  And he’s been on out of town trips with his school and his football team.  Plus, his grandfather was going to be right there to pick him up, and he was, and they called us right away.

It’s only about an hour out of town, there was really nothing to go wrong, but I still felt very nervous.  And proud.  And sad. And excited. And proud.  No reason for it, really.  But it  seemed like a really big moment.
