I had a pretty good day today. A student who had been on a 4 month hiatus after his wife had a baby started lessons again, and then I had Alchemy, my once a month poetry fix, at the Napa Bar.
I would say the instrumental jazz duet were the highlight of the evening. One thing that bummed me out, but it happens all the time so was not entirely unexpected, was that there was a really big turnout for the featured reader, and then half of them left before the open mike section. I guess everybody listens to what they want to listen to, and goes where they want to go and leaves when they want to leave, so fair enough, but y’all missed my poems.
Anyway, as I sometimes do, weather permitting (and tonight the weather was permitting, Spring, long overdue Spring, is finally just around the corner), I walked through Kampa island on my way home and stopped and smoked a joint and looked at the old wooden water wheel and as it turned around and around I got the idea of cycles, and years, and it was back lit on one side, a light that would rise and fall a bit with the slats, but still always stayed on in the same area only, and it made me think of how one thought leads to another for some reason and I thought that would be a cool linkage for a poem, how one thought leads to another, “That reminds me….” and another line from the poem that i started writing there, but which has not gelled into a complete concept yet much yet seen paper, was “This is a city made out of art//this is a city that’s got some heart.
I guess all I’m saying there is that I’m working on my next poem.
Two famous people died today. Since they say if you can’t say anything good about anybody don’t say anything at all, I’ll leave Maggie Thatcher alone. Condolences to friends and family.
But, I am seriously bummed about Annette Funicello dying. Now, that makes me feel old. In movies I watched when I was just a kid she embodied youth and the teenage sexuality my kid self was still looking forward to. She was great. Can’t say she will be missed, because she will always be with us. Condolences to friends and family.
