We Have Arrived

We have arrived at our destination and I must say, I am pleased,  this is a beautiful spot and our apartment is bigger and nicer than the one we actually live in.  It’s kind of a time share arrangement, each apartment is individually owned but when the owners aren’t present, they are rented out.  Due to the fact that there are mountains all around us, and a ski- lift, I’m guessing that it’s more crowded in the winter than the summer, but there are still lots of people here and it doesn’t look like many  of them are permanent residents.

The internet connection is fine, so there will  be no  interruption to this blog, and I have a lovely balcony to sit on while browsing the internet and writing this, looking out over the “lake” and into the forested mountains beyond.  I can hear the water rushing out of the lake and on down the hill in the form of a small creek.

I put “lake” in quote marks for a reason.   I’m sure  all of my  American readers of a certain age and above remember the Clampett family referring to their swimming pool as a cement pond.  Actually, more like a ceeeement pond.  Well, that’s what this is.  I laughed when I first saw it and Helena got pissed off at me.

I’m not complaining.  It’s all  that we need.  The water is clean, and cold, and once you get out into the middle you can lie on  your back and look at the green mountains all around and it’s as good as any lake anywhere.  They  even rent rowboats although I think that’s a bit silly in a body  of water that you can see all at one glance.

Anyway, it’s real pretty and I’m looking forward to a very relaxing  week here.  All  for now.

p.s. in this photo, we are in the 2nd building from the right, 2nd floor from the top

Off to Slovakia

Well, I just signed up for USAY, yet another site on which to waste time and make sarcastic comments.  We’ll see how that goes.

So far, Google+ just seems to be a leaner, lamer, and less colorful version of facebook.  I check in daily and if more of my friends start going there, I’m ready, but so far I’m unimpressed.  I had high hopes for Reddit but  they started accusing me of being a spammer with my very 1st post.  I’m still registered, but haven’t bothered with them for a while.  I’m also still registered with LinkedIn and Quora, but I never visit either one.

Some day I’m going to start my own site, and allow only the coolest people to join, but I’d probably wind up having to kick myself off, so that would suck.

On a more immediately relevant topic, since we canceled our plans to go to New York in October, on account of not having anywhere near enough money, we are starting our summer vacation in Slovakia tomorrow.  I’m really looking forward to it.  I’ve lived in the Czech Republic 15 years now, but this will be my 1st time in Slovakia.  (actually, 1st time for all of us)

I will still blog every day, of course (my wife hates that – she says the only thing I care about is my blog) but it will be more travel related, more like a diary than a running commentary on the news.  Just as well, I’m sure.  It is pretty safe to say that over the next couple of weeks, several Republicans will say really stupid things about guns, gays, and abortion, Obama will continue to betray the left, the  fighting in Syria will continue, there will be erratic and extreme weather in many places around the world, and many animals, especially cats, will get their 15 minutes of internet fame.

I also imagine that some time in the next 2 weeks, Anthony Weiner will see the writing on the wall and will drop out of the New York mayoral race, but I only say that with about 60-70% certainty.

Meanwhile, we will be hiking, swimming, boating, visiting a spa and doing lots of cool stuff which I will tell you all about right here in this space.  Stay tuned.
