I hate to sound like I’m kicking a dead horse, and I usually avoid writing about the same subject in such close succession, but this Bristol Palin thing is bothering me. Not that she got plastic surgery. I think it’s weird, and it speaks to her mental state, which speaks to her upbringing, which speaks to Sarah Palin’s parenting abilities and overall personality, which is definitely an important matter in American politics, but that’s not the main thing that bothers me.

Despite the photos, despite a television appearance, despite the fact that Bristol hasn’t actually denied it ( a few websites ran headlines that said “Bristol Denies Plastic Surgery,” but if you read the articles, you’ll realize that she actually didn’t), it is not a major news story. I’ve seen the pictures in a few different places, but only because I’ve been looking for them. The Huffingtonpost does not have it on their front page. My beloved Wonkette has ignored the story completely so far, and it seems like it would be right up their ally.
This speaks to media collusion, and if they can block a story on Bristol Palin’s plastic surgery out of the public consciousness, get us to ignore the evidence of our own eyes, then they can blank out the strange birth stories of Trig and Tripp Palin, which should be a major news story just for the soap opera weirdness of it, celebrity aside, but the fact that a major party vice presidential nominee was at the center of it made it not just a great story but an important story.
It all reminds me very much of the Bush Gets Hammered at the Beijing Olympics Story. There are pictures. Nobody ever denied the pictures. Bush never issued a statement saying “I wasn’t drunk in China.” He never had to. The press never pressed.

lie about Jesus, he’ll lie about anything. Was he drunk during Katrina? Was he drunk from the morning of Sept. 11th, 2001, holed up on some Air Force base with a crate of Jack and a television, until the morning of Sept. 13th, 2001 when he made that speech, and all that time Cheney was calling the shots, grounding all air traffic and clearing the bin Laden family’s way back to Saudi Arabia?
And if all that’s true, what about 9/11?
That’s why Bristol’s plastic surgery matters. I’m not even asking a lot of the mainstream media. Just publish the photos and ask the questions. It’s not hard work.
