I am feeling a great deal of schadenfreude at the moment, because I’ve always felt that Silvio Berlusconi is a power-mongering, death dealing, money loving, hateful and corrupt old bastard. On the other hand, I’ve always admired his ability to throw a party, his taste in women and, occasionally, his ability to turn a phrase.

So, I am happy to see him convicted of tax evasion, even though the actual case is kind of convoluted and boring. Something about inflated rates for television licenses for offshore companies he owned, blah blah blah pocketing the difference etcetera and so forth. I do hope, though, for his sake, that they don’t send him to one of those bunga-bunga prisons. The man is 74 years old. He might not be able to take it.
Actually, I’ll be surprised if he does any time at all. He gets two appeals before the sentencing goes into effect. The court has already reduced the 4 years down to one year. And rich, powerful people almost never do jail time. Especially former heads of state.
It will send a message, though. Imagine how different our political discourse would be today if George Bush had at least seen the inside of a courtroom instead of everybody pretending that he was actually a normal president instead of the retarded psychopath who actually was at the controls of the world’s most powerful war machine for 8 years.
I’m also rather glad that Berlusconi didn’t get busted over the sex charges because I don’t really object to anything he did in that department. All of the girls involved were perfectly willing. Even Ruby Marough, who he is accused of paying for sex when she was underage, isn’t complaining about him, and she’s over 18 now.
The world is too hung up about sex. It’s none of anybody else’s business how much hot, young, nookie old Daddy Warbucks managed to score.
