Ann’s Stupid Speech

I didn’t actually listen to Ann Romney’s speech (I’m not that masochistic) but I saw a couple of clips and I’ve been reading about it.  Of course, the Republicans are saying it was a great speech, she really connected with women, made the Mittster sound more human, but that’s what they would say.  So, I read the transcript.

What an unbelievable bunch of fluff.  She loves her husband.  I’m sure my wife loves me, too, but that doesn’t qualify me to be president.

Mitt Romney founded a company and made it successful.  Not only doesn’t she give details on that, she avoids saying the name “Bain.”

Oh, yes, it’s hard for a mom to come home after a long day at the office and still have to help the kids with their homework.  But we all know, Ann, you have never had that problem.

She talked about health problems, but it’s her husband and her husband’s party who want to do away with health care.

It was a nice speech, I’ll admit.  The kind of thing you’d expect from a candidate’s wife.  Long on glowing praise, short on specifics.  There was just one spot, one particular two sentence stretch of speech where she almost descended into Caitlin Uptonesque incoherence.

That was this:  “We’re too smart to know there aren’t easy answers. But we’re not dumb enough to accept that there aren’t better answers.”

How can you be too smart to know something?  Is ignorance really bliss? Do you know that there aren’t easy answers, or do you know the opposite of that?

Then, “but we’re not dumb enough to accept that there aren’t better answers.”  Maybe it sounded better than it looks on paper, and actually I know what she means.  It’s quite a positive, upbeat message, if expressed coherently.  Something like “We’re smart enough to know there aren’t any easy answers, and we aren’t so dumb that we’ll accept bad answers.”

But the problem isn’t with what she said, or even how she said it.  The problem is that Republicans DO think there are easy answers.  Cut taxes on the rich.  Cut spending on the poor.  What could be easier than that?  And the Republican rank and file is stupid enough to swallow it hook, line and sinker.
