convinced that the maid is telling the truth and he’s a filthy, raping pig, but it came down to a he said/she said situation and there was no way they were going to get a conviction.
As assistant district attorney Joan Illuzi-Orbon said “Our inability to believe the complainant beyond a reasonable doubt means, in good faith, that we could not ask a jury to do that,” with beyond a reasonable doubt being the key phrase. That’s the law.
My gut feeling that he’s a rapist is just based on my perception of his personality, as seen through the TV screen, and the fact that he is filthy rich and was president of the International Monetary Fund, whose main purpose is to make sure that poor nations remain poor. When you’re at that level of society, it must be pretty easy to believe that you can fuck anybody you want, any time you feel like it. But that’s just my opinion, rank speculation, and even if I were on the jury, I wouldn’t vote to convict based on that.
So, he walks. That’s the way the system works and the next person who is falsely accused of rape (because some women do lie) can be glad it is.
