The Race is On

In the Democratic corner we have Elizabeth Colbert Busch, who is no relation to the evil Bushes (note the spelling), although I suppose she could be related, by marriage (ex-marriage, actually) to the Anheuser-Busches, which would not be a bad thing.

Not as funny as her brother, but she'd have to be better than her sleazy opponent

She is, in fact, Stephen Colbert’s big sister (Stephen is the youngest of 11 children), which is a super-duper plus.  All  liberals love Stephen Colbert, plus a few extreme conservatives who are so stupid they don’t know his hyper-conservative comedy routine is not satire, and that might be enough to put her over the top.

In the Republican corner we have former governor Mark Sanford who, with comically bad timing, disappeared on Father’s Day in 2009.  He told aides to tell the press he was “hiking the Appalachian Trail.”  He was actually in Argentina, with Maria Belen Chapur, which seriously pissed off his wife, Jenny, when she found  out about it.  (When Sanford was in Congress, before he was governor, he voted to impeach Bill Clinton, saying the affair with Monica Lewinsky was reprehensible.)

Oh, yeah, he also paid for the trip to Argentina with state money.

The two are competing for an open seat in the House of Representatives,  in South Carolina’s 1st congressional district, which includes Charleston.  It could be the funniest political race in recent memory, and there have been some funny ones.
