AE911

I’m of  two minds about this.  On the one hand, I hate graffiti.  It almost  always looks like crap  and  lowers the tone of  civilization  in general.  There are exceptions, of course, almost nothing  in this life  is  absolute, but I hate graffiti.

Vandalizing a work of art  is even  worse.  That’s aggressive graffiti.  When someone else has gone to great effort to bring beauty into the world, it’s totally classless to bring it down.

AE911!

AE911!

What’s worse still is that Liberty Leading the People by Eugene Delacroix is a great painting.  It’s not only an important, and beautiful, piece of art.  It’s an important piece of French history, a symbol of their revolution and a monument to the spirit of liberty which lives and breathes in every downtrodden person, everywhere in the world.

Nonetheless, I’d  like to say a couple of words in defense of the woman who wrote AE911 on the painting earlier today in an art museum in France.  First, museum officials say it will be a relatively easy cleaning job.  It’s not as if she used spray paint and covered the whole thing.  It’s not like she slashed the canvas with a knife.  So, to a certain extent, the no harm, no foul rule applies.

But it’s what  she wrote on  the painting that’s important.  AE911.  Most people have not heard of this organization.  I hadn’t.  And, the article I read in  the Huffington Post offered no explanation.  I got the information from the comments section (and you can google it).  AE911 is  a group of architects and engineers (including  demolition  experts) who don’t  buy the bullshit official explanation for the events of September 11th, 2001.

It’s important that their message gets out to the public.

It’s significant that she chose this painting, since it’s so emblematic of liberty and freedom and 9/11/01 was most definitely a bad day for liberty.  Since then, it has become perfectly acceptable for governments to put people in jail indefinitely without trial, to tap their phones without a warrant, even to have them killed.

What this unnamed woman did may have been vandalism, but it wasn’t a random, senseless act of vandalism.

Of course, many will say “there were other ways for her to make her point,” but are there?  The media doesn’t want to hear about it.  (as I said above, the Hufflepuff Post  left that little piece of information out of the story entirely) The conversation has largely died.  The official version, that 9/11 was executed by Al Qaeda and only Al Qaeda, is the version that will be recorded in the official history books, just like they record that JFK was killed by Lee Harvey Oswald and Marilyn Monroe  committed suicide.

History is filled with lies.
