Sam’s Great Game

I’m at a bit of a loss for a topic today.  I considered writing about the prosecutor in New York who lost her job because she was moonlighting as a dominatrix, but I lost interest when I saw her picture.  I’m not in the market for a dominatrix, but I would certainly pick a younger one.  I considered writing about the hunter who was killed by a grizzly bear up in Idaho, but I decided that wasn’t right.  A man did die and I’m sure his family and friends are upset, even though my sympathies were with the bear.  I considered writing about taxes and class warfare but I get a bit worn out pointing out every day that Republicans are pure evil and should never be allowed to hold public office.  I’ll probably get back to that in a day or two.

That's My Son, in the Green on the Right

So, we went to a football game this afternoon.  I was a little bit nervous.  This is a new team for Sam.  Since he was 6, he had been on the same team and he was one of the two oldest kids on it.

Technically, he probably shouldn’t have been on the team at all but nobody  was checking birth certificates or anything.  Well, now he’s 8 and they actually have started taking it a little bit more seriously, so he had to move up an age group.

Today was the 1st game with the new team.  It was kind of a cloudy, dreary day and it drizzled a bit as we walked from Pražkého Povstání.  First, we went to the wrong stadium.  There are sports fields all over this town.  I’m not sure if that’s true everywhere and I just never noticed before I had kids, but I do think the Czech Republic is a bit more sports obsessed than most places.

The field where they played was actually quite lovely, on a high plateau surrounded by poplar trees.  Mostly city views, but open country visible in one direction.  It was still just kind of slow raining, not at all uncomfortable to stand around in.

My worries about Sam’s performance were unfounded.  They played a 3 period game, he got two goals, both in the 2nd period, and then he got to play goalie in the 3rd period, which he really loves.  By that time they were up 5-0.  He did give up one goal, but the final score was 5-1, so it was great.

By that time, though, it was absolutely pissing down.  There was shelter for the spectators but I felt a bit guilty about using that while the kids had to stay out in the rain, so I got drenched, too.  Helena and Isabel just sat at a picnic table and played cards.  Slackers.
