We all screw up sometimes. We all need to make apologies in life. Maybe not Dick Cheney, but he will die unloved and history will not absolve him of his crimes.

The two latest celebrities to be force to make apologies were country singer Hank Williams, Jr. and Johnny Depp. Depp did by far the better job.
First, let’s look at what they were apologizing for. Hank Williams said that Obama was like Hitler, and that Obama and Biden were like the 3 stooges, which shows not only that he is politically ignorant and insensitive, but also that he doesn’t count too good, neither. He said it on national TV.
Johnny Depp said, in a magazine interview, that participating in a photo shoot was like being raped. I get his point, but it’s not going to go down real well with feminists.
There are a couple of statements that are over done in public discourse. Comparing anything or anybody to Hitler and the Nazis is a bit of a stretch. The Nazis started WWII, which killed nearly 20 million people before it was over. The concentration camps were one of the most purely evil things in all of human history. You could, perhaps, compare Torquemada or Attila the Hun to Hitler, maybe Pol Pot or our old ally Stalin, but Obama? Where are the death camps, Hank? Where is the attempt to take over the world?
The other is rape. Women who say “I feel like he was raping me with his eyes” are overstating the case and doing a disservice to actual rape victims. “Raping me with his eyes” means he is staring at you. Maybe uncool, maybe a little bit creepy, but it’s not rape. I don’t like it when people say they were raped, financially or raped, emotionally. Rape is not a metaphor. Or, at least, it shouldn’t be.
Now, on to the apologies. Here’s Hank:
“I have always been very passionate about Politics and Sports and this time it got the Best or Worst of me. The thought of the Leaders of both Parties Jukin and High Fiven on a Golf course, while so many Families are Struggling to get by simply made me Boil over and make a Dumb statement and I am very Sorry if it Offended anyone. I would like to Thank all my supporters. This was Not written by some Publicist.”
Now, here’s Johnny:
“I am truly sorry for offending anyone in any way. I never meant to. It was a poor choice of words on my part in an effort to explain a feeling. I understand there is no comparison and I am very regretful. In an effort to correct my lack of judgment, please accept my heartfelt apology.”
See the difference? Depp actually apologized. Williams just said “I’m sorry y’all got bent out of shape, but I still believe the moronic thing that I said.”
I like Johnny Depp more than ever. Hank Williams Jr. can eat shit.
