Saving Grace

Well, I just watched “Saving Grace” for the umpteenth time and I still think it’s one of the best marijuana comedies, a bit more intelligent than a lot of the others, with totally believable characters.

One of the funniest scenes in any movie ever

It is a film of great scenes, from the opening funeral right through to the frolic on the lawn scene where all the old ladies are dancing with the policemen in a cloud of smoke.  After that, well….

Funniest scene in the movie is the two old ladies in the shop, cracking up as they tried to sell the guy cornflakes and then popping up from behind the counter with the goggle eye glasses and giving him directions to Grace’s house – in the lovely, lovely house up the lovely, lovely hill.  But one thing about watching films multiple times (which I avoid doing because, why?   You know how it ends, there’s no suspense.) is that you know that scene is coming so from the moment they barged into her greenhouse because it was the meeting of the tea club or whatever, I was laughing because I knew what was coming up.

But the scene where Grace smokes her first joint is also brilliant and a totally realistic view of a first time high.  Disbelief that it works, followed by the giggles, followed by a bit of nausea (never happened to me, but it could happen), followed by a raging case of the munchies.

Matthew’s rant in the bar about being non-confrontational and yet caught between the conflicting needs of Ganja Grace and Captain Nikki the fooking lobster queen was an absolutely dead-on piece of monologue.

All of the scenes with the constable were funny.

But everything after the big marijuana bonfire was pure puke, such a Hollywood cliche, where she’s on TV because she’s written a book about it and everybody’s gathered in the pub cheering for her and themselves.

It didn’t quite discredit the whole film the way that Arnold Schwarzenegger’s face exploding and then being fine in Total Recall did, but it came close.
