Pioneers

The selection process has begun for the Mars One project.  This is the extremely ballsy Dutch plan to send a team up to Mars and leave them there for life.  That will save a lot of money and they will be able to pave the way and prepare a welcome for the next crew, and the next, and the next.  By the time the first crew members get old and die off, Mars might have a total human population of a hundred people or more – a veritable Metropolis.

Who would do a thing like that?  What kind of person would leave Earth forever to live on a barren, lifeless rock millions of miles from home with only a handful of other people?  Well, tens of thousands of them, apparently.  That’s how many applications they’ve received.

It maybe helps a bit that the requirements for participation at this stage of the selection process are the same minimum requirements for entry into any pub in Europe.  You must be over 18 and…that’s about it.  There is no maximum age.  There is no need to have a specialized skill.  You can be from any nation on Earth, and speak any language (although if you don’t speak English, you’ll have to learn).

Gerard ‘t Hooft (my goodness, Dutch people have such funny names) a Nobel Prize winning theoretical physicist who is one of the brains behind the project, said that the people they choose, just 4 for the 1st crew, will have intelligence, resourcefulness, courage, determination and skill, as well as psychological stability.

There is no doubt in my mind that among the 10,000+ applicants so far, there are at least several hundred who are completely serious and not nuts at all.  I’m sure that Mars One will have no trouble finding people who are brilliant, crazy fit, fearless and totally dedicated to science.  There are a lot of amazing people in the world.

I’m also quite confident that by the time they launch in 2023, they will have worked out all the scientific bugs.

I salute them.  It will be a major step for mankind.  The meek, of course, will inherit the Earth, which is cool, we’ll take it.  The bold, on the other hand, are moving out.

Good luck to you, whoever you will be.
