Mitt’s son Matt was giving a speech in New Hampshire today when he said: “I heard someone suggest the other day that as soon as President Obama releases his grades and his birth certificate… then maybe he’d do it.”
“He’d” of course means his father would, and “do it” means to release his tax returns publicly, something which quarter billionaire and Butcher of Bain Capital Mitt Romney has so far been reluctant to do.
But it was the birther comment that was weird. His brother (one of the smarter ones, presumably) leaned over to the mike and said “Remember, that’s not our father saying that.” They’ve taken some other measures to walk back the statement since, but still…
The fact that he said it can be read one of two ways. First, that it was totally scripted, an appeal to the birther brigade. They knew they’d have to walk it back publicly, but figured that could also be spun positively and meanwhile every retarded racist idiot in the state of Iowa who still believes that kind of nonsense will come to the caucuses saying “That Mitt’s all right, his kid thinks Obama is a Kenyan.” That, 4 1/2 days before the Iowa precinct caucuses, might be enough to put us over the top and it will all be forgotten in a few days.
The other interpretation is like this: The Romneys are, like most Republicans, so out of touch with mainstream society that they don’t even seem to understand when they should be embarrassed, when they should not joke about something.
They do not seem to understand that they were not only proved wrong on the birther issue, but they were proved to be delusional, moronic, irrational and, just possibly, a tad insane. They were publicly humiliated. Pants around the ankles humiliated.
And they weren’t bothered by that. They still mention Obama’s birth certificate as if it’s the punchline of a joke.
It’s beyond stupid.
