Miss Miss

O.K., this is a couple of days old but I really want to talk about the reaction to the incident, and that’s ongoing.

The incident was Miss Utah (Marissa Powell), at the Miss America pageant, muffing an answer to a creampuff question.  The question, asked by some woman I’d never heard of who is a reality show star, was, basically- “Just how messed up is it that women make less money than men?”

To tell the truth, I don't care that she's an idiot

To tell the truth, I don’t care that she’s an idiot

Her answer was not the worst beauty pageant answer ever, that title still belongs to Miss South Carolina 2007, but it was pretty bad.  Check the link.

But as soon as the criticism started, so did the defensive spin.  I read “It wasn’t that bad,” “She was under a lot of pressure” and even attacks on the question and the questioner, which is ridiculous.  Even if you don’t like “Real Housewives of Atlanta” there’s nothing out of line or difficult about the question itself.  Then, in an attempt to save face she was given a chance, via Perez Hilton, to do it over, which doesn’t really save face at all.

There are two things I’d like to say.  First, it was a truly ignorant answer.  Not only was it non-responsive, it was non-sensical, it was a series of non-sequiturs, a Palinesque word salad with a teabagger dressing.  It totally exposed that she doesn’t have a brain in her pretty little head.  So, people should stop trying to defend the answer.

Second, it doesn’t matter.  It’s a beauty pageant, it’s not debate club.  The whole point is, best looking girl wins.  Why do they  even ask these girls questions like this?  If they have to ask them any questions at all, why not ask them easy questions, questions which they are qualified to answer.  “Which do you like better, dogs or cats?”  “What do you like to do on a date?”  “Are those your natural breasts?”

Because if we can’t keep politics out of a beauty pageant, we can’t keep politics out of anything.
