It was a beautiful day. The plan was to take a walk up to the waterfall and I had no idea what to expect. I knew it was not exactly going to be Niagara.
So, I went in with low expectations and they were wildly exceeded. It was just a couple of kilometers to the falls, which were pretty nice, but we carried on above them and came to a 2nd waterfall and from there on up it was a series of cascades, cascades and falls, water moving in interesting formations around rocks, the laws of physics in visible motion, and we stopped at one point to construct cairns of small rocks as many people had done before us and Sam said “It could have been monkeys, monkeys are intelligent” and he kind of would have had a point except that monkeys, if they were to stack rocks, would probably have some reason for doing so, which is kind of a twist, that a sign of higher intelligence would be the urge to do something for no particular reason at all, which is really, when you put it that way, kind of stupid, and also there are no monkeys in The Czech Republic, outside of zoos.
Anyway, we continued on, and on, and then the kids wanted to turn back and I said not yet and they said when and I said we were going to walk up to the source, although I had just thought of it in that instant, I had no idea how far that was. That placated them for about 5 minutes and they eventually whined enough that Helena gave in, but we reached a compromise solution.
I could carry on and I’d either meet them at the waterfall on the way back down or back at our room. So, I carried on about 20 more minutes and came to a bridge across the stream and could see after that that the trail totally left the stream and I thought, O.K., I can just walk along up the stream a ways, and just after I crossed the bridge I got an SMS and figured it was probably Helena telling me where they were, but it was from the phone company saying “Welcome to Poland,” which was cool, I hadn’t realized I was walking toward the border and wasn’t carrying passport or any other ID, for that matter, but here I was, in a different country.
I didn’t make it all the way to the source and on the way back down I caught up with them at the restaurant by the waterfall, which was probably the kids’ plan the whole time.
In the afternoon we played miniature golf. I don’t get miniature golf. Some of those shots are just not humanly possible. Helena won. Sam came in 2nd. I beat Isabel, but not by very much.
