Second Hand Opinions

I didn’t watch the Oscars, I don’t really care, or try not to, anyway.  I haven’t seen any of the movies and rarely go out to the cinema any more unless it’s for a kids’ film, because I don’t feel that the cost justifies the difference in viewing pleasure between seeing it on the big screen and waiting a couple of years until it just pops up on TV and suffering through the advertisements.

Of course, there are also plenty of options between those two extremes,  but my point is I don’t go out to see films much anymore.  Nonetheless, I still had favorites, just entirely based on what other people had said and I was actually disappointed that Lincoln didn’t get best picture which makes no sense at all because, as I said, I haven’t seen any of the movies.  For all I know, Lincoln sucked.

So much of our experience of the world is second hand experience.  I have people on my facebook page who are strong feminists, marijuana advocates, LGBT defenders, Monsanto haters, animal lovers.

I see their petitions but I seldom click through.  Not because I disagree with their positions – these are, with a little quibbling over details, my positions, too – but just because I can’t be bothered.  If we signed every internet position we agreed with, just because it’s a cause we strongly believe in and it only takes a second of our time, we could spend our whole lives signing petitions.

It’s kind of the same way  I feel about beggars.  I can’t give to all of them and I can’t give any of them enough to change their life, so I walk on by and don’t give at all, usually.

I’d like to change the world, but I’m not going to bust  my butt over it.
