Conflicting Signals

I don’t know what’s going on in the Edward Snowden story.  Anybody’s guess is as good as mine.  Obama said he wouldn’t “scramble the jets” to get him back, which was a decent gesture of reasonableness.  Snowden’s Dad tried to construct a scenario in which young Edward might return to the U.S., but I’m not sure if he’s in the loop at all, or is just talking as a Dad who doesn’t want his son to be exiled for life.  Joe Biden is threatening the Ecuadorians.  The Ecuadorians have said they’re still thinking  about it.  Putin has said they’re not handing him over but,  on the other hand, they haven’t let him into Russia, either.  So, he’s like Tom Hanks in that movie, Terminal, which, although it was a mildly entertaining film, I’m sure had precious little to do with the actual situation on which it was based.

Susan Rice can say really weird stuff sometimes. Is she Obama's Rumsfeld?

Susan Rice can say really weird stuff sometimes. Is she Obama’s Rumsfeld?

Susan Rice, the American ambassador to the U.N. and soon to be director of the NSA, the organization whose massive spying was revealed by Snowden, said today that the leak was really no big deal.  It wouldn’t hurt the U.S. any and everything is going to continue on as usual.

OMG and a double WTF.  First of all, if it’s no big deal, why has this administration been so obsessed with getting him back?  Why has the U.S. risked messing up its relations with China, Russia and South America if it doesn’t really matter?

Could it be that they’ve realized they are not going to get him back and are just trying to put the best face on it?  ( I didn’t really want the Oscar, it was an honor  just to be nominated)

Or could it be that she realizes, now that the information is out there, that nobody really cares.  I find that a bit shocking, we’ve just found out that the government knows which  porn channels we watch, they know where we live, how much money we make  and how we like to spend it and nobody really cares.  People are lame and we’ve got the governments we deserve.  (I say governments, plural, deliberately.  The Snowden thing is an American thing, but Europe is no different.  The  governments are all corrupt and the people,  for the most part, couldn’t care less.  The  sun rises, the sun sets, and as long as pubs sell beer, nobody’s going to get all upset about stuff.

If the U.S. government were to release all of its secret files tomorrow and we found out who killed Kennedy, that there really is a dead alien at Area 51, that LBJ ordered the attack on the USS Liberty in June of ’67, that the Kennedy’s killed Marilyn Monroe, and that 9/11 was an inside job, most people would just shrug and go to work as usual.  The sun would rise, the sun would set, and the pubs would continue to sell beer.
