Well, the election is tomorrow and I am confident, but still a little bit nervous. The Republicans have a habit of stealing close elections and there is no doubt in my mind that there will be a certain amount of skullduggery and shenanigans.
One is the evillest monster who ever lived. The other is a character in Harry Potter.
But, I don’t think it’s going to be close enough for them to get away with it.
The attempt at voter suppression has already begun, with Republican poll watchers watching Black polling stations a whole lot closer than they’re monitoring other polling stations. Also, Voldemo Florida Governor Rick Scott is refusing to extend voting hours despite ridiculously long lines. He says he just wants to go by the letter of the law, but early voters tend to be Obama voters (Obama is encouraging that) and it really looks like Scott wants to make sure as few of them vote as possible.
Still, I’m encouraged. If they’re trying to pull this old shit, it’s a pretty big sign of desperation.
The solution, of course, is to go back to paper ballots. Poll watchers from each party, maybe a couple of independents. More polling stations, keep those lines smaller. Once a district is ready to report, then they could switch to computers, but there would have been, in every local case, a tabulation of numbers which were originally verified by people.
It wouldn’t solve all our problems, of course. Many people are going to vote stupidly. Some famous person (if anybody actually knows, that’s what the comment section is for) once said “Democracy gives the people exactly the government they deserve.”
The better I know people, the scarier that quote sounds.
