Keep the Government Out of Sports

Baseball fans may be interested in this story.  That’s why I’m linking to it, even though I didn’t bother reading the whole thing.  I really don’t care about baseball all that much.

Roger Clemens

It’s not just because I’m living in Europe.  I haven’t watched any American football or basketball for years, either, but I can understand the thrill.  They are fast paced, exciting games.  Baseball is mostly a bunch of guys standing around.  It’s main saving grace is that it doesn’t last as long as cricket.

No, I link to the article to raise a political point.  Roger Clemens, who apparently is a famous baseball player and, as far as I know, no relation to Samuel Clemens, has been found not guilty of perjury, and a couple of other things like that.  He never killed anybody, he didn’t steal any money, abuse any animals or have sex with small children.

This all stems from a congressional investigation into steroid use.

My point is, what business is it of congress whether ball players use steroids or not?  If it’s just the illegal drugs thing then it’s a matter for the police and the courts, same as it would be for anybody else.  But no, this was a big thing, congress had to put all other business aside and spend weeks, months, grilling baseball players.

I remember when it happened.  It was in the latter days of the Bush administration.  While all of us wild eyed liberals were screaming and yelling and hollering for impeachment, while America’s economy was collapsing before our eyes, while soldiers were being killed in Iraq on a fairly regular basis, congress decided that their most pressing business was whether some baseball players were using performance enhancing drugs.

It was a total abdication of responsibility on  the part of congress.  It’s like when I should be busy taking out the garbage, reading to my kids, cleaning the flat or writing my blog and I decide that the absolutely most important thing I should do is a sudoku puzzle.  (Admittedly, this happens.  Nobody should ever vote for me for any position of responsibility.)

In conclusion, I congratulate Roger Clemens on his innocent verdict and wish him future success and happiness, whether he’s using steroids or not.

And fuck Nancy Pelosi, for going after Roger Clemens instead of George Bush.  I will never forgive her for that.
