Sometimes I think that we liberals are too cynical, too greedy perhaps. We tend to see everything in the darkest, most world-is-going-straight-to-hell light possible.
Take the race issue, as it pertains to our current melanin-enhanced President. We liberals are always complaining about what racists the Teabaggers are. We complain about their “coded language” and “dog whistles.” We say “Gosh darn it, I wish they would just come out and say what bothers them. That there’s a you know who in the White House.”
Well, we should be happy they are using the dog whistles and coded language. It means that even the biggest racists in our society realize that racism is an uncool thing and they should keep it under wraps. That is progress. It means that within another generation or two, we might be able to get over the race thing entirely.
Another example came up today. Mitt Romney actually said this, to a reporter: “With regards to women’s health care, look, I’m the guy who was able to get health care for all of the women and men in my state. They’re just talking about it at the federal level, but we actually did something and did it without cutting Medicare and without raising taxes.”
Now, my 1st reaction, as a knee jerk yellow dog Democrat, is to say, “You fucking hypocrite. For the last year you’ve been going on and on about the evils of Obamacare, which is exactly the same as what you put forward in Massachusetts, and saying how it was something you regretted implementing, and you know perfectly well that whole line about Obama cutting Medicare is a lie because everybody’s told you it is, and the only way you managed to get universal health care in Massachusetts without raising taxes was by leaving the state bankrupt so some future governor would have to raise taxes, and now all of a sudden you’re in favor of health care? You fucking hypocrite.”
But what we should be saying is “Hooray! Welcome to the light, Mitt! Now we have two candidates who agree that health care is a good thing and the election can be a reasonable, intelligent discussion about how to best provide it and pay for it.”
And wait for the baggers’ heads to explode.
