Head v. Heart?

That’s how the Arianna H.R. Hufflepuff Puffpost described the Michigan mudfight between Willard “Mitt” Romney and Rick Santorum.  Head vs. Heart.  I can see what they were trying to say.  Caution vs. Crazy.  Finger in the wind poll-taking vs. Gung-Ho go-with-your-gut hard right

lunacy.  I just think head vs. heart is a bit of a stretcher.

We have no particular reason to think of Romney as an intellectual.  He has not written anything of exceptional literary merit.  His speeches do not sparkle.  His business successes have been of the bean counting variety, without particular brilliance or imagination.  He was born wealthy and became wealthier.  He may not be quite the dullard that, for example, Rick Perry or Sarah Palin  are, but there’s no reason to think his “head” is that great.

And Santorum’s heart?  We have pretty good reason to believe that is a non-functioning organ, outside of it’s basic medical function.

Instead of Romney’s head v. Santorum’s heart, I think they could have made the following comparisons:

Romney’s dog on the roof vs. Santorum’s fetus in a jar

Romney’s bank accounts in the Cayman Islands and Switzerland vs. Santorum’s umbilical cashcord from Foster Friess

Romney’s baptism of dead Jews vs. Santorum’s naked desire for a conservative Catholic theocracy.

Romney’s love of corporations vs. Santorum’s hatred of homosexuals.

Romney’s contempt for union workers vs. Santorum’s contempt for college education.

Romney’s record as Governor of Massachusetts, which was so bad he erased all of the computer hard drives before he left office vs. Santorum’s record as Senator from Pennsylvania which was so bad he lost his re-election bid by something like 16 percentage points.

The saving grace in all this is that neither one of them still has a realistic chance of carrying Michigan in November.
