Snow

It’s a sort of a slow news day politically, as Saturdays often are, and the headlines are all talking about something called a “Perfect Storm” which doesn’t make any sense to me.  How can something be perfect if it’s not good?  Besides, how is this storm different from other storms, much less “perfect.”  If, by perfect, they mean really, really big, then they should just say so.

Frigid Beauty

But I looked on my facebook page and all any of my Prague friends want to talk about is the snow.  We noticed it this morning when we looked out the window. Helena was the first to point it out and I took the more cynical view.  Not only wasn’t it sticking, it looked like it was turning into rain before  it even hit the ground.  Splashing in the puddles as opposed to leaving fragile little white lace flowers plonked on the surface.  “Eh, it’s just a slushy rain” I said.

But, it continued.  It was a slushy rain for a couple of hours, gradually falling slower and slower, and then you could see a little white furze on top of the still green grass, and then it was thicker and then I noticed all the cars in the parking lot were actually covered with snow and now it is all over the ground and the trees, a bright whiteness in the dark night and it’s beautiful.

Out in the country, this might last, this may be the early beginning to a long winter.  Here in Prague, I am sure it will be churned into a horrible, gray slush within a day or two.

It’s beautiful right now, though, and I’m hanging on to that.
