Catholic Stooges

Bill Donohue of the Catholic League has condemned the new Three Stooges Moviebecause it is basically a big Catholic joke.  There are two particular nuns in the film that Donohue objects to: Sister Mary-Mengele is a mean, nasty old nun who is actually played by a man and Sister Bernice is a sizzling sex bomb.

Sexy Sister

Bill Donohue will probably not be taken seriously even by Catholics.  Every Catholic I have ever known has enjoyed a good laugh at the nuns.  (Same as in town, father.  Twenty dollars.)  It’s inevitable.  They terrorize Catholic children, they are iconic figures, they dress in absurd outfits and they supposedly never, ever have sex.  There is just way too much material for humor there.  Also, most of the humor is good natured.

I haven’t seen the Three Stooges film yet, but I expect it will be the case here as well.  Despite a few jokes about wanting to have sex with Sister Bernice, I’m guessing the movie is not anti-Catholic (or we’d have heard more about it by now).

I wonder more about whether the Stooges humor will still play in the 21st century.  Kids today (defined as anybody under the age of 50 or so) don’t remember them, and it was an  incredibly stupid brand of comedy.  Three stupid guys calling each other stupid and hitting, kicking and biting each other for an hour and forty-five minutes, and that’s about it.  It’s the live action Itchy and Scratchy show.  People are either left completely cold or rolling on the floor and laughing until they cry and their stomach hurts.  I try to remain cool because it truly is moronic, but I usually wind up in the second category about 10 minutes in.

Actually, I imagine it will be a big hit and I intend to see it, eventually (although not at cinema prices).

The Catholic church has far worse problems than some low comedy about nuns with big tits.
