Go, Wendy, Go!

Wendy Davis, the only U.S. politician in recent memory to actually pull a real, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington style filibuster and make it work (even if only temporarily), the heroine of Texas liberals and women everywhere, is going to run for governor, according to lots of reports.

She's going all the way

She’s going all the way

This is even more awesome than just going from a male governor to a female  governor, going from a conservative governor to a liberal governor, going from a nearly retarded governor  who forgets major elements of his policy in the middle of a nationally televized speech and thinks prayer is an adequate response to wildfires to somebody who is reasonably intelligent.

A)  It’s Texas.  The only state with more electoral votes is California.  If Texas turns blue, and a Democratic governor would be a strong indicator that it’s turning blue, then the Republicans will never win another national election.  Oh, they won’t disappear.  People don’t change their minds easily, especially Republican people.  But, the party has swung so far to the ridiculous that they will have to disband and reform under a different name.  That works.  Lots of former communists are still involved in governments in former Warsaw Pact countries, they just don’t call themselves communists.

But, it will take them time and in the meanwhile, a lot of good can be accomplished.  If the Democrats are smart (which is a bit of a stretch, I admit) they will invest heavily in Davis’ campaign, plus every congressional race, state congressional race, and mayoral race in the state of Texas until it turns as blue as a 6 year old holding their breath.

B)  She’s got the bug, and the timing is right. After a few terms as governor, she may well become America’s first female president.

Hillary will run but will not win.  As a campaigner, she sucks.  She’s smart, knowledgeable about politics, experienced, and did a fair job as Secretary of State even though she didn’t keep the job very long, but she lost the nomination in 2008 and she’ll lose it again in 2016.  There are probably at least 7 or 8 Democrats who want that job , it will be a hard fought primary season, and Hillary Clinton does not win the hard fought elections.  That’s the  story of her life.

So, after 8 years of President Tim Kane or President Sherrod Brown, Wendy Davis will make her move in 2024.  I’m predicting it now.

Sometimes, the Good Guys Win

Today was NOT a slow news day, so there is a great deal to comment on but, on the other hand, I suspect that on most of the issues, I am in agreement with the majority and where’s the fun in that?

So, in brief: Yes, it’s great that the Supreme Court voted to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act, and I’m sorry to rain on the Gay Parade, but that hardly makes up for their vote the other day to overturn the 1965 Voting Rights Act.  Nineteen Sixty fucking Five.  It’s 2013 and in many ways, we have taken great strides toward that golden day that Martin Luther King dreamed of, when a person could be judged by the content of their character and not by the color  of their skin, but in many ways and, particularly, in many regions, we have not.  This vote allows the Republican party, which holds the power in the South, to rig elections in the South so as to hang onto that power in perpetuity, even if the demographics shift a bit.  It’s seriously messed up.

Wendy Davis - for today, the most popular woman in America

On to Texas, and the heroic stand of Wendy Davis.  It was (I’m stealing this from some commenter at Wonkette) the night the Yellers Rose in Texas.  Let’s remember, it wasn’t actually a win for progressives.  Just the narrow avoidance of a loss.  But, we have a new hero, and a feeling that the tide has turned.  It was a pretty big deal.  One thing I’m especially pleased about is that I know someone who was in the crowd – well done, Dominique!

As far as the whole Edward Snowden thing, he’s apparently still in Russia and Russia has no intention of handing him over to the U.S., so perhaps he may have planned his escape reasonably well.  He’s doing better than Julian Assange, at any rate.  Ecuador has said they have to think about asylum, they are probably waiting for the U.S. to offer them a huge sum of money, or something else.  Iceland is also a possibility.  They took in Bobby Fischer, and he was a serious pain in the ass.

Miley Cyrus has admitted that she smokes marijuana, in seriously large amounts.  Good for her!  I like Miley Cyrus.

In Massachusetts, an American football star, 23 years old with a 40 million dollar contract, shot and killed a friend because he was pissed off at him.  Yes, yes, innocent until proven guilty and all that, but it looks bad.  What an asshole.

The thing is, great athletes, great actors, great musicians, are not necessarily great people, or smart people.  Same percentage as the general public.

So, don’t expect role models.  Be your own role model.
