This is the 2nd Chapter of my book “The Guru Kalehuru’s Guide to the Magical Numbers of the Tarot.”

Two is about union, duality, couples and romance, the yin and the yang, opposites, day and night, black and white, good and evil.  Two is Gemini and Libra.  Contrast and balance.  , Janus, the two headed Roman god of beginnings and endings.  Two is a round trip , two is a double dip.

In addition to the 2 of  swords (balance and justice, a sword in each hand), the two of cups (a happy couple), the two of coins, (balance and being able to juggle finances) and the

2 of staffs, (which I suppose could be read as a longing for the other, for fulfillment, although I generally disregard the number and translate that one as wanderlust – it isn’t always about the numbers but this book is about the numbers), 3 cards of the major arcane have major connections to the number 2.

They are the High Priestess, which is all about dark and light, yin and yang, rational v. spiritual, head v. heart, good girl v. bad girl, The Chariot, which is all about bringing opposite forces together, unifying the two into one, and Justice, who of course holds the scales.

But, of course, if someone has a lot of twos in their reading, go with the romance angle.  Everybody in the world is looking for love and, with a little bit of encouragement, they may find it.

This is a rough draft of Chapter 1 in my next book, “The Magical Meanings of Numbers According to the Gurukalehuru”

One is individuality and independence, but one is also loneliness and solitude.

One is represented by the Ace and an Ace, in military aviation, is someone who has shot down 5 or more enemy planes.  By extension from that, Ace is just a good nickname for someone who is really good at their profession, an ace reporter or an ace detective, for instance.

An ace in a standard deck of playing cards is usually the top card.  To keep an ace up your  sleeve, while it may have originally referred to cheating at cards, now means to have something powerful and effective that your opponent, be it in business, sports or love, doesn’t know about.  “Cynthia isn’t sure whether she should marry me or not, but I’ve got an ace up my sleeve.  Just wait until she sees my cottage by the lake.”

One is also the first, so it is a sign of beginnings, as in “The longest journey begins with a single step.”  So, it is no surprise that in Tarot, the Ace is can be read as a card of beginnings, particularly the Ace of Cups and the Ace of Coins.  Nobody ever minds hearing that they’re at the beginning of a financial winning streak but their eyes really light up when they hear of an upcoming romance.  (Really, unless you are reading the Tarot cards for brutal truth, which I do not recommend, stick with the beginnings theme with the ace of cups.  Nobody wants to hear about the solitude and loneliness thing.)

If there is one thing I have learned from my years of reading Tarot, it is this:  Everybody loves love.

It also comes as no surprise (getting back to individuality and independence) that Aces are often read as cards of destiny, especially Swords and Staffs.  I’m not sure if there’s a connection, but they’re both pretty phallic, also.

O.K., so I’m 4 days behind which is still a lag from ending the weekend 4 days behind which is kind of disgraceful especially since one of my recent blogs was about setting goals, and actually I guess I was sort of trying to talk about standards and even that was sort of a cheat blog because it was just cut and paste from my word of the month in the newspaper.

So, here I am taking shortcuts again since today is the 29th which means that today’s blog, tomorrow’s and the next day’s are being written on the 29th, 4 days in the future of that past, where I am now.  We are all time travelers, we just can’t ever go back.

So, they will all go straight into the archives and never be read by anybody, except maybe my wife.  Hi, baby!

Nonetheless, I hate them to sound like a diary entry so I am going to kill two birds with one stone, I am going to multitask, or would it be simultask?  Anyway, the other writing project that I am even further behind on is my book of the month, so the next two blogs will be chapters in that.  The theme is the magical power of numbers, 1-10, so I could squeeze a few more blogs out of it, but I hope to not have to do that.

Chat with you tomorrow, kthxbai.

Over at www.thepartisandialogues, a site which is seriously infested with teatards and Randroids and I’m thinking of leaving (that is one of the lovely things about the internet – no need to say good bye, no need to explain, you just stop signing in and you’re done) because it does get tedious talking to them, but someone posted the question „What do you call yourself?“ I guess hoping to distinguish between the social conservatives, the fiscal conservatives and the Christian right.

So, I figured that deserved a response.

Liberal, progressive, secular humanist.  I believe with a little bit more intelligence and a lot less hysteria, the world could be a much better  place.

I believe that all people in the world want a decent life, with  enough food to eat, clean water to drink and a comfortable place to sleep at night.  I believe that the earth has the resources and mankind has the technology to provide that and if we could get beyond those people who are trying to carve out their own power niche within a confusing and corrupt society, we could have it.

I am against war, in almost all circumstances.  I am against torture, and imprisonment of people without a trial, in all circumstances.  I am against capital punishment.

I am a big supporter of space research, the legalization of marijuana, complete transparency in government (I don’t buy the national  security excuse.  When governments keep secrets, there is something they don’t want their own people to know), high speed trains, recycling and alternative forms of energy.

I believe that 9/11 was an inside job.  I believe the JFK assassination was an inside job, too, but that’s not a strictly liberal, knee-jerk reaction.  I also believe the Kennedys killed Marilyn Monroe.  I believe Guy Fawkes was framed.  I believe that people who have lots of power pull that kind of shit all of the goddamned time.

I don’t believe that there is a Jewish conspiracy to control the world’s finances and I no longer believe in Aliens.  That is, I am sure there are other intelligent, technological species in the universe, it’s almost inevitable statistically, but I doubt that we are being visited much.

I guess that’s enough for now.

In yesterdays blog I wrote about goals.  If you don’t set them, you will never accomplish them.  An opposite philosophy would be, wherever you are going, that’s where you’ll be.  You may drift through life.  You may have a purpose driven life.  I’m not passing judgment, I’m not saying one is morally superior to the other, because in the end we’re all dust.

But I am setting some goals.  There are professional goals.  We’re now trying to negotiate a partnership with another school.  I think we can give them an infusion of life and I think they can help us get back in the game.  So, that’s one goal.

But writing is as important to me as teaching, and my goals are pretty clearly stated on the front page.  A blog a day, a book a month and poetry on the side.  But what are the reasons for those goals, and what are the goals of those goals.

The reason is straightforward enough.  I want to be a writer and hope that if I churn out enough words, in a rigid enough format, eventually the seed will take root and then sprout, reaching through the dirt at the interface of earth and sky, extending a te nuous tentacle, you’ve all seen the bean sprouts in time lapse photography on the Discovery channel, reaching into the sky and converting the energy of the sun into stalk, branches, leaves, flowers before casting a new seed aloft on the wind to begin the cycle again.  I want to change the world and I want to be famous and rich.  Also, I truly feel that I have things to say which no one else will say, certainly which no one else is saying, and whether they are worthwhile, original thoughts or just random mental doodling, I want them to see the light of day.

Which brings me to the goal of the goals.

A book a month sounds like a hell of a lot and it is and so far I’ve been getting away with a lot of padding, with some good stuff in the middle.  The goal of the goal is to write something great, something which explains the universe, which sheds light on the meaning of human existence, which improves humanity or something like that.

But, I’d be happy with amusing people tremendously.
