A Rainy Day in Prague

Rain was the story of the day today, as it was yesterday, and probably will be for  the next 3 or 4 days.  Despite that, and the fact that I have to get up at 5:30 on Thursday mornings, I began the  day in an upbeat mood.

Rain is a positive thing, it keeps things looking green, and things are looking almost unnaturally green in Prague.  Just before the rise of man, all of Europe was rainforest, nearly impenetrable rainforest, and you can see that sometimes.

A Rainy Day in Prague

Out of the house at 6:15, ran to the Metro, got to the bus stop at Na Knížecí right on time and the day was off to a good start.  I even got a seat.

I must have a bit of a cruel streak because as the bus was cruising down the road it was rolling  through  all the puddles  and sending waves of water fountaining onto the sidewalks and when I saw one guy get totally drenched I laughed out loud.  Got some nasty looks from other passengers, not because they were in any way sympathetic to soaked pedestrians, just because they are a bunch of grim faced bastards and do not approve of levity before 11 a.m., or between 4 and 6 in the afternoon, or  most other times, actually.

Normally, I have two lessons at that 1st location, but the 2nd one has been canceling  a lot lately, as he did today.  So I had plenty of time to get to school and had breakfast at McDonald’s and  did the  daily Sudoku, which was a bit too easy.  Then the battery on my Kindle died.

At school, my 6th graders were great, my 9th graders were as miserable as ever, they don’t even hide the fact that they are totally bored with my lessons and I, in turn, am sick of them.  I’ve given it my best shot, I’ve tried to make the lessons interesting, and now I’m just showing  up  and running out the clock and it doesn’t make anybody happy.  Vicious  circle.  Then I had 1st graders, they are a fun class and  they like games, and songs, but when I actually try to test them to see what they’ve learned, it can be a bit depressing.

The only lesson left was my 4 seven year old girls and….they weren’t there.  I guess I was told last week and just forgot.  I decided to walk from there to pick up Isabel at school because it wasn’t actually raining and I was way early, what with the canceled lesson and all but, before  I got  there and after it was too late  to go back and jump on a tram, the sky opened up and all of the angels started pissing on my head at once.

So, it’s been a rough  day.  I bet it’s because I laughed at that guy getting drenched this  morning.  You know, karma.
