It is 11:15 p.m. and I want to get a blog written so I can go to bed, so I look around the room for inspiration, I check the Huffington Post but my last two or three blogs have been political and I don’t want to get into a rut, so I say to myself, I’ll write about the next thing I see on T.V. and bingo, it’s an ad on animal planet for a show about cats and dogs, asking the question “Are you a dog person or a cat person?,” so I’ve got my blog topic.
First off, it’s a bogus question. Somewhat like those stupid facebook quizzes like “Which character from the Wizard of Oz are you?” or
“Which cocktail are you?” or “Which Victorian era novel are you?” I hate those. I got suckered into doing the “Which Harry Potter character are you?” (Luna Lovegood) because I’m a big Harry Potter fan, but I don’t feel the quiz really told me anything I didn’t know about my own personality. I wasted 5 minutes of my time and gave Mark Zuckerberg a little bit more control over my life and he’s got too much of that already. It’s a bogus question because people are people and very, very few are actually defined by whether they prefer dogs or cats. I think many people are in the “generally indifferent to both species” category, many more are in the “I like them both O.K.” category and quite a few people would answer the question by saying “depends on the dog, depends on the cat.”
Having said that, I definitely prefer dogs, but that’s mostly just because I don’t like cats much. Stupid animals. I was quite surprised when I saw that YouTube clip of the lion at the zoo recognizing the woman who’d saved him as a baby. I can’t imagine a housecat showing that kind of recognition and affection.
I’ve owned 3 dogs in my life and they all had quite distinct personalities and I’m certain they all knew who I was. So, a dog can be a friend. A cat is just a cat. I’m not looking for a dog, though.
I’m no fan of dog poop, or fleas. If I want to take a long walk, I can take a long walk by myself. If I want a friend, I’ll look on facebook.

I agree. I like to hold and pet a cat…when they let me, but the litter box and all the hair and fleas are too much, nasty mess.
