Today, while standing at the tram stop with my son, on our way to football practice, I saw somebody driving way too fast. He was in a shiny, new black sports car. Now, I must say, I don’t know cars. I wouldn’t know the difference between a Porsche and a Jaguar if I got hit by one. If you talk to me about linguini, I’m all ears. Talk to me about your Lamborghini and my mind drifts to other, more interesting realms while I look, and nod and say “That’s very nice.” So, I couldn’t tell you the make and model and even when I say “new” it means newish. Sleek, modern looking. But whether it’s this year’s model or 10 years old, I wouldn’t know.
In any event, it was an expensive and very powerful car. We were standing at Invalidovna and I first saw, and heard, him clear
over on Rohanské Nabřeži. That´s that new street like a freeway that goes along the river in Karlin, where they tore out all the junkyards and abandoned warehouses and they´ll probably develop the area eventually, but for now there is a lot of wild space and a putting green. And today there was a traffic jam but somehow this guy managed to plow his way through it, turning right back onto city streets right there in front of us, doing a wildly illegal U-turn and then getting back onto Rohanské Nabřeži and heading back into the center of the city, still at top speed. This was shortly after I´d had an internet argument with a guy who said that rich people shouldn´t have to pay so many taxes because they´d worked hard to earn their money and I´m afraid I got a little bit carried away, because that “hard work” argument seriously ticks me off. I work hard and I’m not even close to rich. So, after making a fairly reasonable argument, I closed with “fuck you.”
Perhaps it was a poor choice of words, but I don’t regret it.
There’s nothing necessarily evil about being rich, I have friends who are rich and very nice, you wouldn’t even know it right off the bat just to talk to them, but noblesse oblige, dude. You have to pay taxes and you’re not allowed to drive like an asshole.
I’m sure it didn’t happen, but I would love it if the police caught that jerk and impounded his car.

I feel all people should pay a flat percentage of income for taxes, social security, medicare funds, with no loop holes allowed, and on all income….no limits at which taxes and fees stop. Most rich have made their money on the backs of the poor, if not by even worse deceptive means. Most countries have a ‘mixed economy’, and it is time to stir the stew so the wealth does indeed ‘trickle down’ to those on the burned lower level in the pot. There should be a ‘means test’ for all government benefits on all people.
