Run, Johnny, Run

Two incidents in today’s news, which are linked.

First, Willie Nelson got busted for pot.    Like, it’s no surprise to anyone that Willie Nelson smokes pot.  He talks about it all the time.  As far as appearances go, you’d know he was a hippie from two blocks away.  And he’s been busted before.  The police stopped his tour van at a checkpoint (checkpoint?  checkpoint? – what has become of the US of A) and said “there was an odor of marijuana coming from the van.”  Well, duh.

Can you imagine a world in which the police caught, and convicted everyone who smoked pot?  There’d be more people in jail than out.  The streets would be emptier than after the rapture.

Anyone, the other story is about a guy named John Robert Boone, and he’s from Kentucky.  Any relation to Daniel?  Could be.  Anyway, he was a big grower, sometimes known as the Godfather of Grass or King of the Corn Bread Mafia.  He already had two convictions, and served 10 years on the second one, because he had 182 growing operations going on in about 10 states across the northern south and the midwest.  So, due to a 3 strikes law, he was looking at maximum life in prison as police closed in on his home farm, with about two and a half thousand plants.

Fortunately, Boone  wasn’t at home.  Now he’s on the run, and the police haven’t got a clue, and they  aren’t getting any support from any of the locals,  because Boone is well liked in the area.  Not just the stoners.  Everybody.

You’d think he’d be easy to spot, old guy with long white hair and beard, and lots of tattoos.  But I read this in a John Grisham book once.  The beard comes off, he gets a trim, a nice suit of clothes, and he looks like a respectable businessman. He could be in Brazil within the week, safe from extradition and hopefully, with enough cash on hand for a comfortable retirement.

I sure hope he gets away with it.  Run, Johnny, Run!

Another great blog, Willie. I can remember sitting in the Boston Garden (since changed name) waiting for the Rolling Stones, but they got arrested in Rhode Island for pot. They finally arrived at around midnight and it was the greatest concert I can remember attending!

  2. Great post. I hate the way the government criminalized pot use. I’ve been using it for years to manage my depression. I have to say it works much better than the chemicals the government would prefer I take that make me slow, fat, and very lazy – the direct opposite of how I am when I smoke: happy, motivated, excited…

I’ve had a great time clicking through your articles tonight. I hope you are well.
