A lot of people think I am a conspiracy theory nut. I firmly believe that 9/11 was an inside job, that JFK was set up by LBJ and Halliburton (then known as Brown and Root) no matter who pulled the trigger and that the Kennedy’s, no angels themselves, had Marilyn Monroe murdered. I suspect that Bobby may have done it himself.
However, I dropped my belief in crop circles once the hoaxsters confessed, I no longer believe in area 51 and I never bought into the “Moon landing was staged for TV” thing. So, I am a bit selective.
My friend Karel is much more of a conspiracy theorist than I am. Sometimes I think he’s a little bit crazy, but that’s partly because he wears shorts on days that I think are long underwear appropriate and fasts for a week or two once a year.
Anyway, he reads a lot and is a thinker, so who’s to say who’s right and who’s wrong?
Anyway, we were just having a conversation on facebook about wikileaks and he suspects that it’s all a setup so the U.S. government (or, probably more accurately, the Evil Monolithic One World Government) will have an excuse to crack down on the internet.
I sure hope he’s wrong, but I’m not so sure. There are certainly some people in power who would like an excuse, any excuse, to monitor internet communications, block sites they don’t like, limit what people can say and make money on the deal. If they succeed, we are in for a long, hard period of totalitarian rule that it will be hard to escape from.
I try to stay to stay optimistic, though. Here are the reasons I think they will fail:
1. The internet is constantly growing and evolving. If they crack down on it in one way, it will change in another.
2. The U.S. government does not own the internet. No government owns the internet. No corporation owns the internet. That could change if we’re not careful. 50 years ago, no one would have believed you if you’d said “In 2010, people will pay for drinking water and think nothing of it.” For now, though, the internet is still a free agent.
3. The people who want to control the internet aren’t very good at the internet.
4. Old people die. Young people take their place. Oddly enough, the older I get, the more I appreciate the natural wisdom of this arrangement.
5. Information wants to be free. It’s true.
So, while I am confident that the Evil Monolithic One World Government will fail to completely stomp out individual liberty and freedom of thought, I think we should stay vigilant. And connected.

Well, if you live in a van and smoke dope and crap in the bushes long enough, you’ll believe EVERYONE is out to get you. Not saying you do this. But someone you mentioned in this story sure does. 😉
I believe that all governments have a vested interest in squeezing us all like lemons to make their lemonade. I believe that they will anything and EVERYTHING possible to achieve more power over us. Except dropping bombs on ourselves. That’s just plain stupid. Ignoring all the signs and letting it happen as a haphazard plot to benefit the military/industrial complex? Most definitely. Actually hiring Habibi to fly jets into the building (and/or setting off bombs to demolish the twins)? Not likely. Even the stupidest of Texan sheriff (Dubya) knows not to shoot himself in the foot. There were definitely plots afoot and it will take many, many more wiki leaks b4 we know 4 sure.
Side note: Elvis sure visited the White House and all its various presidents over the years. Do you think he and Marilyn saw something they shouldn’t have? Hmmmm.
This is what I think, and I believe there is some real conspiracy to this even, all of the bullshit information that is out there, there is really a lot of it, to support one conspiracy or another, I believe it can be divided into three categories. . . 1. Things people made up just to sell videos, to sell a product, or to sell a political party, 2. Real evidence that people high in government and (other power figures) really are fucking with us, 3. Crazy made up crap people in power put out to make anyone who questions authority seem like a complete lunatic. (Okay, 4. Some folks just forgot to take their medication.)
Ah, yes, it’s the let it happen v. made it happen conspiracy conundrum. But the point is, he didn’t shoot himself in the foot. He blamed the whole thing on Abu Oswald and, just like LBJ, got the war he wanted.
