there’s an article over on Huffpo about a Virginia state representative and all around nutcase who wants Virginia to issue it’s own gold and silver coins, just in case the dollar becomes totally worthless. this is in response to that.
Never blame a good idea on a bad source. I read those words many years ago and it struck me: “I’m reading these words in the Reader’s Digest. QED.” Just because this guy’s a homophobe and self righteous dunderhead doesn’t mean an alternative currency is a bad idea. I
do fault him with a lack of imagination, though. Just because gold and silver are traditional marks of wealth does not mean they are the only possible standards, and they have obvious limits. Before them, cattle were the currency. Buckminster Fuller gave us the answer, many decades ago. Wealth is the result of natural resources times the energy available to work them, which means both labor and energy production, times the state of the art, the knowledge of how to manipulate those resources. So, if you had a currency which was based on that formula, it would increase in value with every scientific advance especially those which increased energy production, in a constantly upward spiral. There is no doubt in my mind that the world is wealthy enough to provide all of us with nice homes, clean water, food galore, good schools K-20, miraculous health care, first class public transportation and more while the rich continue to get insanely rich. I’ve got no problem with rich people being rich. I just don’t like the idea of anybody, especially me, being poor. It could be done. It’s a question of paperwork because, bottom line, all currencies are arbitrary.

my god man! in the US such talk is heresy! you could be burned at the stake! or your steak might be deliberately burned by the cook. either way, it’s no laughing matter, is it?
I agree. However every day now I see news of how countries and religions are becoming even more polarized, more hateful toward those who disagree with them. Since all decisions are emotional (‘spiritual’) I see little hope that the wealthy who control everything from government to churches will ever provide for the Utopia you describe at the end of your post.
Heresy is good.
Jean, I agree that we´ll probably never change human nature. But I still think the future will be better than the past. There´s room for hope, anyway.
