The title of Bristol Palin’s memoir (I’m guessing the reason they’re not calling it an autobiography is because of the auto part – I don’t imaging for one second that she’s going to write this book herself) is going to be “Not Afraid of Life.”
I suppose the title could have been worse. “Not Afraid of Spiders,” “Not Afraid of the Dark” and “Not Afraid of Making a Complete Idiot Out of Myself on National Television” were among the rejected choices.
However, I don’t expect the book to be a number one best seller. Oh, it will have enough sales to make a bit of money and it will be referred to as a best seller – half of the author’s on my facebook page refer to themselves as either “bestselling” or “award winning” authors. I know that award winning might mean they got a prize from their local newspaper for “best debut novel from a writer without any discernible talent,” and I suspect that the definition of bestselling is likewise flexible.
Bristol’s book will be snapped up by the faithful, but they are dwindling in number and have already purchased plenty of Palin books and trinkets. At some point Palin fatigue will set in even among that crowd. But almost nobody outside that crowd will buy it, because it isn’t really going to say anything interesting or new.
How did she feel about being on Dancing With the Stars? Really, any number of people could write that book. Anybody who’s been on Dancing With the Stars. How did she feel about people criticizing her dancing and saying the only reason she got as far as she did was her mother’s fame and an army of supporters monopolizing the phone lines? I don’t think she’ll be up front about that.
Being pregnant? Come on. Teen pregnancy is not that rare. Millions of girls could write about that. Of course, there are still some unanswered questions about Trig’s birth, whether or not he’s truly Sarah’s baby and that whole wild flight from Texas story is true or, if he is in fact Bristol’s baby which would mean that the pregnancy with Tripp was somehow faked. Those are details I would like to hear but, there isn’t a chance in a million anything like that will be in the book.
So, I guess I’ll give this one a miss.

As prurient interest in her wanes her career arc inevitably goes toward porn.
Tragically, she will probably not even be good at that.
