It’s Offensive Because it’s Deliberate

What do Larry Kudlow, 50 cent, Gilbert Gottfried, Rush Limbaugh, Rod Blagojevich and  Glenn Beck have in common?  They all made really offensive comments about the situation in Japan.  Now, at first I just thought, no big surprise, you’ve got thousands of celebrities hooked up to social media, not to mention media media, it’s inevitable that a couple of them will say something stupid, whatever the event.  Besides, you expect Beck and Limbaugh to say stupid shit.  Then, a more sinister explanation crossed my mind.

Tsu Na Me Me ME!

Kudlow, a TV financial analyst, had the most disturbing statement:  “The human toll here looks to be much worse than the economic toll and we can be grateful for that.”  On the other hand, he was the quickest to apologize.

50 cents comments were just moronic, and not actually as insulting as some of the others, as he joked more about the tsunami that was expected to hit California, but still…  A rapper needs to have good timing, and this wasn’t good timing.  (note: I’ve never liked 50 cent).

Gilbert Gottfried, the only actual comedian in the bunch, unless you count Limbaugh, tweeted a seriously tasteless joke, but at least, unlike Rush Limbaugh’s comments, it was recognizable as a joke.  (I just split up with my girlfriend but, as they say in Japan, another one will float along any second.)  He has apologized, but still lost his job as spokesduck for an insurance company.

Limbaugh’s joke amounted to “Boy, a lot of those people got DROWNED, HAHAHAHAH!”

Rod Blagojevich said “What happened to me was a tsunami.”  No, it wasn’t, Rod.  Being impeached and convicted on corruption charges, of which you were completely guilty, is nothing like having your house repossessed by the ocean.  Or worse.

Glenn Beck said that the earthquake and tsunami was God’s punishment to mankind, for not being Christian enough.

Anyway, the dark pattern I see:  All of these people have careers which depend on public exposure, and in some cases it’s hanging by a thread.  If an offensive comment gets them a headline, at least it reminds the general public that they still exist.   “Hey, look at old Rod.  Hair still looks good.”  Sometimes folks don’t even read the story.  Actually, it’s a twofer.  You make the news when you make the original stupid statement and then again when you apologize for it.

So, it means these comments were probably premeditated, they’d thought about them, knew they were wrong and offensive, and went ahead and said them anyway.  Not cool.

Good point. A lot of people probably don’t notice but this is what these guys do all the time.

I’m reminded of Dr. L and the n word and like the next day she was doing interviews.

  3. Oh, yeah. It’s a pattern.

I totally agree it’s insenstive what they have said. But Gilbert Gottfried is the only one who isn’t truly being cold-hearted, he’s just doing his job. He’s made far more offensive jokes (see the Howard Stern, Jewish incident on YouTube) As offensive as it is, it’s completely what he wants, to shock you into laughing. I don’t think that particular joke is that funny, but I sure have died laughing at some of his bits that I won’t repeat here.
