Unraptured

Well, May 21st has come and gone and the world did not end.  So, Harold Camping and his followers were wrong.  Just about as blatantly and publicly wrong as anybody has ever been in human history.

This did not happen

Nobody’s really terribly surprised.  But I was just reading an article over at the old Huffingontoomuchpaste about the rapture that never was and how all the Christians who are such devoted believers they just stone cold make up shit to believe in like this are feeling today, still on Earth.  I was a bit surprised by their comments.

First, they were all pretty  happy to still be alive on Earth.  25 year old John Ramsey had quit his job, donated money and convinced his whole family, who spent the day watching TV nervously.

His wife, Marcia, is 9 months pregnant.

He has to find a new job, but now he just says  “Life goes on, I get to live. I get to be a dad.”

As much as people go on and on about heaven, nobody’s really in any hurry to go there.

Secondly, none of them seemed to have any anger whatsoever toward Camping.

“I guess no man knows the day or the hour,” said Peter Lombardi,  44.  He spent the day Sunday peeling the Judgment Day stickers from his van.   “I’m not disappointed. I’m still living today,”  he said.

He’d donated over $1,000 to spreading the word, but doesn’t want his money back.

“It’s not [Camping’s] fault,” said Ramsey.  “Nobody held a gun to my head. I read the Bible. The math added up. I don’t think anybody would do something like this without meaning it.”

So, the fact that he meant it sincerely is enough for these people.  Not bothered at all about the fact that he was wrong.  And though they admit that Camping got the date wrong, they still believe there will be an end to the world, an end to the human race, massive wailing and lamentation, and they see that as a good thing.

They may look and talk normally, but they are fucking nuts.
