Apparently, the most dangerous group of people in the United States today are the Independents. Both the Democrats and Republicans desperately want to court them and dread offending them. Of the 3, Independents have a plurality of the voters.

But who are the Independents? What is their energy policy? What is their economic policy? What is their foreign policy?
Let me answer those questions one at a time: Who are the Independents? They are the people who don’t pay enough attention to politics to know the difference between a Democrat and a Republican. They are that “some of the people” who, according to Lincoln, you can fool all of the time. They are farmers and firemen, teachers and real estate agents, they are people just like us. They are morons. They are the ones who say, when you ask them who they will vote for “They’re all crooks,” or “Nothing ever changes.” True enough statements, for sure, but definitely an indicator that you haven’t given the subject much thought.
What is their energy policy? Some independents are big on solar energy, some prefer wind, and others believe in a policy of “kick their ass and take their gas.” It’s a hard thing for a politician to address those two wings of the “Independent” party simultaneously, but most of them will say something like “exploring clean energy alternatives” while accepting huge donations from oil companies.
Their economic policy likewise employs a shotgun approach. Some of them favor a return to the gold standard or a national sales tax. Some independents are more creative, like the guy who suggested we sell the moon to the Saudis for a trillion, trillion dollars because they’d probably pay it and there’s nothing up there, haha! (actually, I just made that up)
Their foreign policy is literally all over the map and changes from day to day as hundreds of millions of middle aged arm chair generals use their computers to move pins around maps. I seriously find it disturbing, whenever there is a violent tragedy, such as a mass shooting or a bombing or something like that, the number of people in the comments section who consider themselves weapons experts.
So, politicians of both parties will continue to court this totally artificial classification of people, walking straight down safe street with the blandest comments they can find, hoping that on election day, a large enough percentage of them will say “Eh, he’s got a friendly smile. Let’s vote for him.” And that will be that.

Even if you pay attention to politics it’s often hard to tell the difference between a democrat and a republican. I can’t say that either party does a good job of representing me. I want more choices!

Are you serious??? I can’t imagine how you came up with this huge over-generalization of independents. Sure they’re all over the map in what they believe. They aren’t part of any existing group because those groups are not well suited to them. They are not a one-size-fits-all demographic. They have no interest in being part of The Borg (old Star Trek reference). They’ve intentionally taken the stand that none of the existing parties fits what they stand for. They aren’t followers, blindly following any one party line. They think outside the box, they want to analyze the pros and cons of issues and decide for themselves. The various parties have largely been hijacked by extremists, special interest groups, and big money which leaves a lot of people feeling that sound and practical policies don’t stand a snow balls chance in hell of getting passed by way of the Dems, Repubs, Tea Ps, etc.
I get it that you hate the Republicans but do you really think the Democrats are sainted and that they religiously implement policy with only the best interests of the voters in their hearts?
You don’t have to label yourself as a Democrat or a Republican. You could label yourself a liberal, a conservative, a social liberal and fiscal conservative, a fiscal liberal but social conservative, a technocrat, an isolationist, an environmentalist, a theocrat or a plutocrat, at least it would have some meaning.
Independents is just a blanket term for those who really don’t know what the hell they are.

They are people who abhor labels because they are too divisive, too extremist leaning. What is the label for someone with some liberal leanings and some conservative leanings, depends on the issue in question?
Independents, in my view, look at each issue individually, not as part of a lump sum. To me, that’s intelligence.
