Evil Republican of the Week – Todd Akin

Todd Akin (R-Mo) wins this weeks coveted Evil Republican of the Week Award (an award which is screaming out for a catchier name, btw, and any suggestions would be appreciated).  He said “at the heart of liberalism is a hatred for God.”

He loves God so much he's got a boner

Now, I’ve got several objections to this.  I am a liberal.  I am also an atheist.  So, I don’t believe that God exists.  That’s a far different thing than hating God.  I don’t believe Harry Potter exists but I don’t hate Harry Potter.  I don’t believe mermaids exist but I don’t hate mermaids.  In fact, I would go so far as to say that to hate something, you have to believe it exists.  I do not hate orcs, for instance.  I identify with the elves and the dwarves who hate orcs, but I don’t have that visceral feeling of revulsion, that burning desire to see an orc get hit by a truck, which is the definition of true hatred.

Secondly, it is just typical of the right, to think they are more religious than the left. (there are more of them who talk about it, for sure, and claim to speak directly to Him.  But whoever those voices in George Bush’s head are, they are not God.  Ditto for Joan of Minneapolis.)

There are religious people on both sides of the aisle.  From many different religions.

Basically, the right wingers want religion to be an election issue, and they want to present themselves as the religious party.  It’s bullshit.  They can’t win an election on any earthly issues because they are not only wrong on every one of them, but actively pursuing an agenda which is detrimental to poor people, working class people, middle class people, women, children, senior citizens, the environment and the future of life on earth as we know it.

Thirdly, this all came up during a discussion of the pledge of allegiance to the flag.  I would like to point out at this time that I not only object to the “under God” insertion, I object to the very idea of a pledge of allegiance.  Screw that.  I’m an American citizen because I was born in America.  I will show precisely as much or as little allegiance as I feel like it at any given moment.  A pledge of allegiance is against the basic idea that America was founded on – that people should be free, not servants of the state.

So, congratulations, Todd Aiken.  You are this week’s evillest Republican.

Reminds me of the recent ‘toon http://www.somethingofthatilk.com where he says, “Say No to Brainwashing.” Isn’t the pledge the same sort of “indoctrination” that we were warned about vis the Soviets? Wasn’t that what they made people do: profess their unquestioning devotion to the State? Doesn’t the Pledge lose it’s significance when it’s perfunctory?
