A Good Day for the Liberals

Yesterday  was an off-off  year election in many places, which means that a few school board and zoning commission seats changed hands,   but we should not mock.  An awful lot of political power is wielded at the local level and the dingbats are drawn to those elections like a moth to a flame.  Another thing about off-off  year elections that’s historically true is that wacky proposals get put on the ballot then.  It makes sense.  Since turnout is low in these elections, if you can mobilize a few thousand people in the support of your nutcase cause (let’s say, for example “End Traffic Stop Slavery!”) then you’ve got a decent chance.

Still one more thing is generally true of off-off year elections, is that that’s when Democrats get their butts kicked, because all of the well-intentioned liberals are sitting on their couch with a cold  pizza and a big, fat old joint, while the Republican, stirred up by bile and hate, are out voting.  (full disclaimer – since I live in Europe, I only vote in Presidential elections, which is entirely hassle enough.  Also, I’m registered to vote in the States in just about the safest Democratic district ever….)

However, that didn’t happen yesterday.  In Mississippi, a law that would have declared  a fetus to be a person, effectively calling abortion murder, was shot down.  The union busting bill in Ohio lost.  In Maine, the issue was same day voter registration, which Republicans are against, Democrats are for it.  Honestly,  I can’t see why that last one is a big deal, I mean, it’s not hard to get registered to vote.  If somebody leaves it to the last second, maybe they just don’t care enough.

So, what’s going on?  Is the left making a comeback?  Is the right collapsing?  Is it a bunch of coincidences?   I sure hope it’s a resurgence, but time will tell.

Could it be that the less vocal majority is tired of the insane asshats trying to create an extremist utopia? That would mean getting off their butts. It’s not entirely impossible.

The right could also be testing the waters, or pushing the bounds little by little. Ie. Ok, maybe you didn’t agree that a fetus is a full human, but, next time around, you might not be as opposed to something similar but slightly less extreme. Piecemeal, they’ll eventually get to that point, because the general populace won’t find the individual measures too onerous. Just a theory.
