Obama’s Great Day

When I read this morning that Rick Perry had dropped out of the race, I was saddened.  That’s because, as a liberal Democrat, I would like this Republican festival of feces flinging to go on unabated for as long as possible.  With Perry out, Romney (or Rmoney,as commenter

The Cayman Islands - Where Money Goes on Vacation

nounverb911 referred to him over at Wonkette) is looking more inevitable than ever.  Or was.  What a difference a day makes.

First, there’s the news that Santorum actually beat him in Iowa, although there is something still very fishy in the vote count.  Then, however, comes the blockbuster ABC news story that Romney has millions of dollars – somewhere between 13 and 33 million dollars – in secret bank accounts in the Cayman Islands.

Romney’s team explains that everything was completely legal and that may be true.  It’s still going to destroy his candidacy, just because it sounds so bad.

First, the Cayman Islands are not part of the United States.  Why does an American businessman have his money abroad?  Aren’t American banks good enough for him?  Secondly, they are exotic tropical islands, which conjure up images of partying on the beach, pina coladas, big fat spliffs and other un-Mormonish activities.  They also make people think of Miami Vice and Hawaii 5-0.  3rd, Cayman Islands is easy to spell and easy to pronounce.  If Ted Kennedy had drowned a girl in the Cayman Islands, he never would have been re-elected to the Senate.  Chappaquiddick?  After a couple of days of struggling over that one, reporters across America were ready to write about almost anything else.

4th, being the totally clueless, insensitive, totally tune deaf to the zeitgeist  multi-millionaire that he is, he will almost inevitably make the argument that “it’s not really all that much money.  25 million bucks is only 1/10th of my net worth.”  Again, true, but not likely to garner him a lot of votes.

So, the fight for the nomination is now between a badly damaged Cayman Mormon, serial adulterer and disgraced former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, Rick “scientists are immoral”  Santorum and crazy old Dr. Ron Paul.

My guess is, they’re drinking champagne in the White House tonight.
