We are heading up to the cottage in about an hour for two days. Czechs tend to put more emphasis on Easter Monday than Easter Sunday, so I am writing this blog at 8:40 in the morning and will write tomorrow’s in the evening, much closer to my usual time, so my anti-Chuck Grassley screed will not get as much uptime, but that’s O.K.
Grassley will continue to be an unrepentant troglodyte, my blog wasn’t going to change that, and he will continue to have his supporters among the millions and millions of people who do not read my blog so no harm, no foul.
Easter has never been my favorite holiday. Christmas at least has Santa Claus and other fun stuff for us non-Christians but Easter, not so much. I find the Czech Easter particularly bizarre. The Easter whip is like something out of Borat or Andy Kauffman’s character in Taxi. I understand that it has it’s origins in fertility rites and, as such, is kind of cool but it’s still an excuse to beat women, and a way to trivialize the beating of women. Seriously, I am very suspicious of any guy who enjoys this tradition too much.
Also, my daughter is 5 and people still think it is cute that she carries a whip and waves it around like a boy, but what is the cutoff point for that?
I don’t know, I suspect that Czech culture itself is changing on that point, so I feel kind of confused and will just be happy when the whole thing is over.

What’s the confusion, Willie? How is the subjugation of women acceptable?
Sure, its done in fun…. until some man decides it is an object lesson in how to keep “his woman” in line. Happy Easter/Passover!

Most abuse of girls and women is done in the name of …”I was just joking”. If you call out the abusive man he will say “you take things too seriously”…. all excuses for the abuse he dishes out. Most likely he is trying to compensate for his own SHORT-comings, or he is reflecting his own poor, ignorant upbringing. Girls and women need to grab the ‘whip’ and thrash the man, then leave him.
