Two Recent Cases of Southern Fried Stupid

Most people are pretty nice as individuals but, good grief, as a species we are dumber than dirt.  Democracy and the Dunning-Krueger effect have combined, with devastating effect.  The world is ruled by idiots.

We don’t need no public education…Louisiana Governor Piyush “Bobby” Jindal, Republican of course

Two stories in the news recently have got me really depressed.  First, the North Carolina state legislature…they didn’t like the results of a study that said sea level will rise by 1 meter by 2100, so they passed a bill saying that sea level predictions would be made the old way, without any of this fancy-schmancy scientist talk about Co2.

It’s not exactly an intelligent way to react to a crisis. One meter.  Less than 90 years from now.  We’re not talking about geological time any more.

The other one, maybe even eviller, was  in Louisiana, where Governor Bobby Jindal is fixing to privatize the school system.  The plan is  to take a whole bunch of money (at least $20 million) out of the public schools to pay private industry, businesses owners and church pastors to educate children.
“We are changing the way we deliver education,” the Governor said.

It’s change, all right.  But without the hope.  If I lived in Louisiana, I would move immediately.  For the children.

What was the old method of sea level prediction? Look at it in the morning and say “Surfs up”?
I was pretty disgusted about the Louisiana school bill, too. Especially that they would give public funds to religious schools of the most dubious sort.

  2. Pretty much. They take the data from the last hundred years or so, average out the rate of increase, and there you have it. No need to worry about carbon dioxide or the melting polar ice cap or anything.
