Courage and Loyalty in the Republican Party

Hoo-boy, the rats are fleeing the sinking ship, the light has been turned on and the filthy little Republican cockroaches are scurrying for their crack in the baseboard.

World’s Most Boring Man, Tim Pawlenty

It’s all about the Mitt Tape, the speech that was secretly recorded during a fund-raising dinner at another plutocrat’s mansion in May or, as Sean Hannity put it, “waaaaay back in May.”  In that speech, thinking he was speaking among friends, Mitt told a funny story about a Chinese slave labor factory, whined about reverse discrimination saying he’d be much better off if he was a Mexican, because those darned  Mexicans get all the breaks, said the Palestinians aren’t ever going to stop with the  rockets and whatnot because  they just love killing Israelis so much, and that 47% of Americans are lazy, fucking useless parasites.
I’m not too surprised.  We knew  it was what he was thinking.

Also, I’m not too surprised at Romney’s reaction which was, at first, to insist upon the accuracy of his statements (which they’re not, particularly, but that’s already beside the point) and then to  do damage control and say he wants to represent 100% of all Americans.   Romney can flip back and forth like that with ease.  It’s his superpower.

What has surprised me is how many Republicans are abandoning him now, in his hour of need.

Tim Pawlenty is stepping down as co-chairman of Romney’s campaign in order to spend more time with his family take a job as a lobbyist.  The statement he made was  full of praise for Romney, but he’s moving on.  I’m sure if things were going well, he wouldn’t be leaving.

Then there are the 4 Republican Senate candidates who have made statements disagreeing with  Romney.  Linda McMahon of Connecticut, which surprises me, because I thought she would be much more of a double down sort of a gal; Linda Lingle of Hawaii; Dean Heller of Nevada, and Scott Brown of Massachusetts.

George (the man who said “macaca”) Allen from Virginia is running for governor again, and he’s also trying to put some distance between himself and Romney.

This is a great moment in history.  We are seeing the Republican party implode in front of our very eyes.
