There were a couple of stories that caught my eye today. This 1st one I guess somebody must have posted on my facebook page, because I don’t usually read Slate, but maybe i should start. This is not only interesting to those who are interested in the life of Hemingway, it is a historical record of a slice of real life during WWI, and I think it would make an excellent movie. Booze, broads, a little bit of military comedy, old trucks and quirky characters…it’s basically MASH, 1918.
But, it is also interesting to me as an example of what people did before there was YouTube, and photoshop, and emoticons. It lends some credence to the theory that people are getting stupider as our technology becomes more sophisticated.
The second article is about a very stupid person who is alive today. She is only 19 and, I confess, I think she’s kind of cute. But, good grief. The girl steals a car, robs a bank and then makes a crappy YouTube video of herself smoking dope and bragging about it, and complaining about how she’s a government victim because the government took her baby.
She didn’t really give too many particulars about that but, after viewing the video, I have to say “Way to go, government! Good call!”
There are a couple of things I take away from this. First, there are still a lot of people out there, not all of them in congress, who haven’t quite figured out how this internet thing works. Sure, the police might have caught her eventually anyway, I doubt it was a cleverly thought out bank robbery, but the YouTube will make conviction a lot easier.
Second, if even a dumbass like Hannah Sabata can make a video and put it up on YouTube, I’d better get my butt in gear and start video blogging. Don’t even need to rob a bank.
